September Issues

So it's actually October. But the weather is just now turning cool, so hopefully you will forgive my lack of blogging when you see how handily I have condensed the best of the September fall fashion issues of several magazines into this one spot!

Feast your eyes on some of my picks for fall:

Because these were torn from magazines and rearranged randomly, then scanned and worked with in photoshop, I feel like the need to cite sources has been voided in the process!

Cool as a cucumber

Ok, so the weather may not be classifiable as cool after 11 am, but we are heading in the right direction and I'm excited!

Some online looks that have raised my heartbeat recently:

A cute way to start adding layers to summer pieces to transition them to fall. I want some brown flat boots!

I LOVE the colors from this engagement shoot! And these shorty boots are really great, too.

Can't wait to start layering.

eye spy

Right now is my favorite time of year. You don't have to be a student to have fond memories of shopping for school clothes and supplies, picking out the best outfit for the first day of school and feeling that electricity in the air that cooler weather brings.

I asked my friends to share some items that remind them of back to school. For some it's a new dress or bookish cardigan while for others it's a modern take on classic school uniform pieces- a sweater vest, blazer or knee socks. Enjoy!

Picks:
Tedder- Alayna shirt dress, Delias, $49.50
Ryan*- Harvest Moon dress, Roxy by Quiksilver, $32.40 (on sale at the time!)
Dani- Navy schoolboy blazer, J Crew, $188
Katie- Textured stripe knee sock, Sock Dreams, $8
Kris- Sweater vest, Banana Republic, $69.50
Lisa- BDG varsity cardigan, Urban Outfitters, $48

*Ryan is a boy and my youngest brother, good pick huh?! Maybe i'll get him to choose some boy looks for us in the future...

Blama

So I've been experiencing some blama - that's blog drama- which has resulted in me changing my blog domain to www.arklatexstyle.com!

I'm excited about this and think it will be a good thing as I expand my blog to include more local content- people, shops, home ideas, etc. So... yay!

That being said, I'm interested in some fashion-minded local people who would like to have themselves or their home be featured here! Naturally you have to be in the Texarkana or Shreveport area, unless you want to send me your own pics. Contact me via arklatexfashion[at]gmail[dot]com if you have ideas or questions!

Cheap n chic

I like seeing people mix ridiculously cheap and ridiculously expensive items together.

Beach Baby

I haven't written a blog in forev, which always makes me feel like a loser, but that doesn't mean I haven't been combing the internet, looking for items to buy for my upcoming beach trip! (I'm the worst about buying things before a trip.)

Items on my radar:

1. mix & match bathing suit separates - American Apparel, $25 each

2. a lightweight sweatshirt for breezy beach evenings - Old Navy, $9.99
3. a nautical cover-up/dress for day, Urban Outfitters, $30
4. some sweet new aviators - Fred Flare, $11
5. a lightweight plaid shirt - Urban Outfitters, $19.99
6. cute beach hat - Eugenia Kim for Target, $20-ish? (sold out, but i still liked it!)
7. basic tank in soft fabric - Old Navy, $5
8. plain ole khaki shorts - J Crew, $20
9. stylish beach bag - Kitson, $38

Will there be oil washing ashore where I'm going? Possibly, but we already relocated our beach adventure from one gulf coast spot (Gulf Shores, AL) to another one in Texas, and although the oil is following us... we aren't backing down! Wish me luck.

Punch of color

I just discovered these pants - too bad they missed the boat for my neon brights post!

Not sure if wearing these would provide a fun punch of color...or a punch in the face, but they're definitely interesting!

Morning Ritual

credit

One of my favorite things to do in the morning is to sit in front of my computer and browse news, blogs and whatever else while I drink a cup of coffee.
Or three.

Lately, I have been perusing fashion and street style blogs to glean inspiration for my outfit each day. I wanted to share a few images that I collected this week for one reason or another:

photo from Elle's Street Chic blog
I just love the confident look on this girl's face, not awkward at all even though a stranger is taking her picture in the middle of the street. Would I wear those boots? No, but she looks great.

photo from Elle's Street Chic blog
I don't know that I would have thought to mix the texture of this dress with a jacket the way that she did. I think it works really well.

photo from Style Scout, a London street style blog
I have been wanting a navy jacket with gold buttons forev, I love it over this breton striped shirt.

photo from Elle's Street Chic blog
This is the perfect outfit for a Saturday, to me.

photo from Elle's Street Chic blog
I was just telling my friend Candance that I can't get into the chunky shoe trend. This picture may have singlehandedly turned it around for me, I love the ease of the pants and the shirt, kinda loose, and this would not have worked with any other type of heel.

At the recommendation of my friend Ashley I've just recently started checking out Polyvore... it's looking to be a potential gold mine of outfit ideas!

eye spy

* Eye Spy is a new feature where a panel of friends (sometimes the same, sometimes maybe not!) each find an item they like from an assigned theme. This time we chose neon brights for summer. Enjoy!

Dani: psychedelic furs t-shirt, ModCloth, $14.99

Tedder: bright green & turquoise dangle earrings, Lakeshore Creations on Etsy, $12

Katie: neon clutch, featured on the blog Best Thing Today (the link for the clutch led nowhere, so alas, I'm not certain who makes it.)

Kristen: Demille pump, Joan & David on Endless.com, $130

Art project: Mother's Day card

(I meant to post this last month...whoops.)

One of the things I try to convey on this blog is that inspiration can be found everywhere. Art, fashion, design... they're all connected.
Some people may wonder how these inspirations can be applied to their life...

Enter: a homemade Mother's Day card. Generally my personal style of "art" is limited to stick figures. Seriously. But I remembered a painting that I saw on a blog that looked kinda simple and decided to try and recreate it, sort of, on a blank white card to use for Mother's Day this year.

Here's the original:

And here's my interpretation:

It's not a masterpiece, but the recipient loved it and I can say I made it myself! Inspiring, right?

The blog where I originally saw the painting is Little Green Notebook.

What is Etsy?

Not too long ago, I mentioned one of my favorite sites to someone and received the question in reply, "What is Etsy?" The thought that some readers of this blog may not know what Etsy is had never crossed my mind, since I reference it so frequently, and I decided the topic warranted a blog post.

Etsy is an online marketplace, within the marketplace individuals set up their own little shop and sell homemade items; these vary from the literal, like homemade baked goods, to vintage clothes that have been altered to add their own personal flair. There are crafty things, like knitted scarves, blankets and baby items to pottery to paper goods to clothing to paintings and photographs and the list goes on and on. It's awesome.

The coolest thing about the site to me is the number of ways available to search for an item, you can shop by what type of item, what color, things made locally, and my favorite way - Pounce. With Pounce you can choose to either see shops that just made a sale (what I do) or shops that have never had a sale (unfound treasures!). Naturally there are some bizarre things on there too, like doll clothes and stuff, but as my boyfriend always says - there's a pot for every lid.

Here's the handmade Valentine's card I bought for the boyfriend for Valentines Day, which is now framed to hang in our bedroom - it's an original piece of art!

Photo from the Etsy shop of Mint and Honey Papergoods, located right here in Texarkana!

All of the items in the graphic above are things I've either purchased or had purchased for me as gifts. It's a great place to buy presents for people, especially baby shower gifts, in my opinion. Get on there and check it out!

Love the store, love the site

If you've never heard of Madewell, then boy are you in for a treat! Up until last week they had a website where you could check out looks, but in order to get your hands on anything you had to go the a store, the closest one for me personally being at Northpark in Dallas. Well now you can shop online, hurrah!

The store is a little sister to J Crew, so the fashions are not too wild, more classic yet eclectic I would say. (Also, not cheap! But if you're like me you will cyber-stalk your fave items till they go on sale.)

Here are a few of my favorite pieces available right now:

1. rail straight jeans - $89.50
I love dark denim

2. romantic ruffle dress - $88
To me, this is super adorable and would look cute in winter with a long-sleeved shirt underneath and tights and/or boots.

3. pointillist cardigan - $98
I'm crazy for cardigans, so I would wear this belted over a dress or just with jeans over a mismatched graphic tee.

4. jewels & chains necklace - $58
I've been looking for a cheaper version of the Fenton/Fallon for J Crew jewelry line. If you aren't familiar, check it here

5. canyon messenger - $128
I know I'm going to get flak for this, but I'm really shopping for a cross-body style purse right now! Totally bringing back my fifth grade self, but I saw a girl with one that looked really chic. I don't want to spend this much - not even half this much! - but I will snag one soon.

6. lace illusion tee - $42
I really love this, it's a little bit sheer. The black and white one is equally cool, if not more lace-like.

All clothing images from www.madewell.com. Image at the top taken by me, in the Dallas store, just seconds before I was told pictures are not allowed.

Sunset nails

A new salon I'm patronizing? Um, no.

sunset pic by me, polish photos from American Apparel

American Apparel has new nail polish colors!

I know this has nothing to do with our local area (and I really AM trying to do more local content), but you know I love American Apparel and all of their stuff IS made in the USA!

Everyone loves a freebie

I added a pair of earrings from Etsy designer Larque to my favorites last week and this week I got a message that he was offering a buy one get one special. I couldn't resist picking up two pairs of his rosette earrings...

Images from Larque on Etsy

(These aren't the colors I got, I'm allowing that to remain a surprise!)

If I'm not wearing my basic diamond studs then I usually wear dangly earrings, so this will be a change for me. The shipping was a little high for Etsy, $4.75, but they are coming from Canada so I understand. Can't wait to get my little package in the mail!

What I did yesterday

Yesterday will go down in my personal history book as the day I tried to clean my keyboard's spacebar (again) and the day I discovered Dorothy Perkins.

Dorothy Perkins is basically the UK equivalent to Forever 21, from what I can tell. But I think the clothes are better. (Better looking. Whether or not they're better quality, I can't say.)

I really, really liked some of the dresses, jewelry, and they even had cute bags- including a Mischa Barton line, what?! Here are just a few of the things I liked...

All images courtesy of dorothyperkins.com

It's fairly inexpensive, too! If you were in England it would be downright cheap. Am I the only one that didn't know about this?! Shipping to the US is 10brit moneys, or roughly $15.

Blog I'm feeling

I recently discovered the blog Color Collective and I am LOVING it right now!

Basically the author takes pictures that she likes - clothes, rooms, flowers, whatever - and pulls the colors out to showcase the chosen pallette. It's a great place to get ideas.

(screenshot of the blog)

But what kind of ideas would I get, you ask? Oh ho ho, let me tell you.

1. Color accents you didn't think of for your home
2. Ideas for adding color to an outfit by way of accessories
3. You might choose a zany color for some printing (calling cards, stationery, etc.)
4. If you do any kind of design... or you could even just incorporate new colors into your blog
5. Find colored items you already have in your closet you didn't think to pair
6. Be inspired to draw a picture, make a photo collage, put a throw pillow on your bed, make some jewelry, buy mismatched pillowcases, whatever!

chip off the old block

I don't know anyone who would actually wear a matching outfit with their kid, I don't think... but American Apparel has some of the cutest pieces for kids, I couldn't resist putting together these similar looks in honor of Mother's Day!

Year in/year out

I can't believe it's May, the year is almost halfway over! Last year I said I would start shopping for Christmas gifts sooner than my usual end of November... Does that mean I should start now? Eeeks! It's not even summer!!

Liberty of London patterned background came from Target website, I got the idea and the link here.

Table for my printer, part II

Ok, so a loooong time ago I posted a before pic of a little table that I thrifted and planned to use as a printer stand, it looked like this:

Poor baby.

Wallpaper samples were ordered online from Graham & Brown, ideas were gleaned from the internet, paints were looked at, plans were hatched and finally...

it ended up looking like this:

I KNOW! It's plain white.

Well the wallpaper was for the little shelf, but the shelf's bevel put a damper on my plan. Then I experimented with covering just the top of the shelf, doing an inset, doing geometric cutouts and a whole gaggle of other things that I would literally agonize over for days before ruling out. In the end, I just painted it gloss white and called it a day.

But I still think it turned out well! It matches another piece of office furniture that I also scored from a thrift store and did some work on, which I will save for another post...
And the best part, my printer is no longer on the floor. I call that a win.

For those interested in the process: I sanded the whole thing, primed it with Kilz, then applied two, count em two coats of gloss white latex enamel, using a mini roller on the top for an extra smoothtastic finish.

Food for thought

I checked out a blog recently where a dude posts a picture of everything he eats. Every single thing, even if it's just a snack. (It wasn't as interesting as it sounds, a lot them were of powerbars - in their wrappers. Or like just a banana or bowl of cereal. I was disappointed.)

That inspired me to post some of my more recent eating experiences that were pretty & that I happened to have photos of.

Butter beans & rice at home - I ate this for lunch twice this week but could eat it every day. My boyfriend? Not so into it.

Red curry from Danh's in Shreveport - This was my friend Kristen's lunch, it photographed better than the Tom Yum soup that I had.

Crunchy rolls at Ichiban, also in Shreveport - best sushi in the Port, we think!

April's Fool

When I saw this image on J Crew's homepage i just had to go in search of some floral items. I am really into spring this year, in case you can't tell! Like... really.

Everything's a-bloomin'

I started a Flickr account- see it here - to make some of my pictures available to the public.

Maybe you'd like to use one of my spring flora pictures as a desktop pic like I am! (See screenshot below). If the downloadables aren't high-res enough for you, just email me and I'll send a bigger version.
(Some may have to be rotated to landscape also, depending on how you wanna use em.)

IMG_3272

My desktop with all my sticky notes cleared off...

Side note: To open a Flickr account you have to open a Yahoo account now, cause they own Flickr. Well the choices of security questions you can attach to your account were like: Where was your honeymoon? Where did you meet your spouse? What's the name of your favorite nephew? What's the name of your oldest/youngest child?

I thought it was interesting because: I'm not married, I have no kids, and I also don't have nay nieces or nephews!

Wonder what Flickr consider
s their target demographic to be... Apparently not as young as what I would expect!

Spring, come back!

It's official, I haven't blogged in two weeks. But the weather has been soooo nice that I've been spending all my free time outdoors! And then today happened. One of my projects for the weekend was supposed to be the putting away of sweaters and winter things that for sure cannot be worn in warm weather... but Mother Nature had other plans. I woke up this morning to snow on the ground, sighhh. I am pretending not to notice and expect to see the sun back any day now.

I've been collecting bits of spring inspiration over the past few weeks and the dresses below are the result of some window shopping on Bluefly's spring dress extravaganza...

I'm not usually into animal prints, but this leopard one on the right seems subtle enough that I would make it work, the cut is adorable! Reminds me of a grown-up Pebbles Flintstone.

Spring, I eagerly await your return!

Peeptoes, buckles and ties- oh my!

So even though the spring magazines came out a couple of weeks ago, I'm just getting around to viewing mine, eeps!

Something that jumped out at me and I had to comment about were these hybrid shoes I'm noticing. It's like booties and lace-up oxfords got together and had a baby.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

(That sandal thing is a Tod's shoe, I scanned it from the magazine ad...)

Overheard in Shreveport

Scene: Mother and daughter shopping together, enter multi-stall public restroom... Mother finishes first, washes hands and stands waiting for daughter to emerge from her stall.

Mother: I think that will be a really cute gift for her, don't you?
Daughter from inside stall: [silence]
Mother: Yeah, it will.
Hurry up grandma!
Daughter: Who are you talking to?
Mother: You!
Daughter: [long pause] I'm texting.
Mother: [sighs and leaves bathroom]

Tiny place

I love this article about this guy's tiny apartment- the whole thing is 178 sq feet! That is nuts.

His decor style reminds me of one of the Owens' characters on Royal Tenenbaums. He had no design experience but just the pictures of his apartment got him a job at an architecture firm, awesome!

What a cool bed!

I have that same mounted pheasant at my house, no joke.
